It All Started with a “Swedish Inventor-Engineer”
Towards the end of the Second World War, Swedish manufacturing grew at a record pace. New companies were founded, and innovation-driven entrepreneurs laid the business foundations for operations that have shaped a sustainable future ever since.
Ingvar Kamprad founded IKEA, and Erling Persson opened a women’s clothing store in 1947 that would eventually become H&M. 1947 was also the year Bertil Svedberg — a versatile, visionary and inventive engineer — founded Cibes as a brand within his own company, Elektroborg AB, in Stockholm. Bertil Svedberg had a burning desire to develop new things: new technologies, new products, alternative innovations that would open up new market opportunities. If Bertil Svedberg were here to witness our product development and innovation, he would not be surprised by what we have achieved, and he would immediately see new opportunities along our business path — because we have shown just how much dedication and commitment to developing a company really matter.
What he could never have imagined, however, is that his lifts would be installed at the Louvre Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, in an office building next to the Russian Hermitage in St. Petersburg, and for use during the visit of Pope John Paul II to Poland — or that more than 70,000 of them would be installed in over 70 countries around the world.
Cibes’ Swedish origins – going all the way back to 1947. Our past tells the story of everything from our very first steps to who we are today, and where our vision is taking us. We are immensely proud of the company’s foundations, because a business only lasts this long through continuous development and an unwavering commitment to a business idea that has kept growing for more than 79 years. Over the years, Cibes Lift Group has sold and installed more than 70.000 lifts, used by millions of people around the world every single day. We want our lifts to connect people of every generation, making it easier for them to meet and stay in touch. Our business is about giving people an equal right to access every space. That is the company’s vision, and that is who we all are.
Our company keeps expanding, adding new group companies wherever it makes sense. All of our employees share one culture and the same core values: responsibility, development and professionalism. Cibes lifts stand out because they can be tailored so well to real-world use, which is why they are popular in far more than private homes. Commercially, Cibes lifts also answer the needs of people in over 70 countries — in shops, shopping malls, apartment buildings, offices, libraries, train stations, airports and warehouses. Cibes has grown rapidly and steadily over the past twenty years: in 2000 sales were around SEK 100 million, in 2010 around SEK 250 million, and in 2018 sales passed SEK 1,000 million, with more than 5,200 lifts installed worldwide.
Today Cibes has 1,200 employees across branch and sales companies throughout Europe and Asia, with more than 70,000 lifts installed together with over 200 partners worldwide. We continue our journey towards new goals, still guided by the same core direction: bringing people together and giving everyone an equal right to access every space, while we keep developing and delivering innovative home lifts. As a global company set on growing sustainably, we know we need to be where our customers are served best, supporting continuous and dependable service across our whole business cycle — from sourcing all the way to shipping and delivery.
Since 2012, our group’s head office, R&D department and main factory have been gathered under one roof in the small city of Gävle, around 200 km north of Stockholm.

In 2020, Cibes Lift Group established its own factory with an R&D centre in Jiaxing to shorten lead times, cut transport distances, and add features that better answer the needs of the local market.
