What Is EN 81-41? The Certificate to Know Before You Buy a Home Lift
EN 81-41 is the European Union safety standard that sets the requirements for the design and installation of platform lifts for people with disabilities or impaired mobility, typically used in public buildings or residential buildings. Cibes Lift home lifts carry this certification too.
EN 81-41 at a Glance
- EN 81-41 is really just the short name used in the industry. Its full title is “EN 81-41 : Safety rules for the construction and installation of lifts – Special lifts for the transport of persons and goods – Vertical lifting platforms intended for use by persons with impaired mobility” — in other words, safety rules for the design and installation of lifts, covering special lifts for transporting people and goods, and vertical platform lifts for people with impaired mobility.
- The scope of the safety standard covers the vertical travel of a platform lift at low speed (that is, ≤ 0.15 m/s) serving defined floor levels. These are commonly used as home lifts, or as lifts for wheelchair users.
- Its main purpose is to guarantee safety, reliability and accessibility in design, use and maintenance.
This standard is part of the EN 81 family of safety standards, which also includes EN 81-20 (passenger lifts) and EN 81-50 (lift system testing and inspection).
The Background of EN 81-41

A screw-driven home lift certified to the EN 81-41 safety standard
EN 81-41 was first issued in 2010 by CEN/TC 10, the (European Committee for Standardization, Technical Committee 10) , to set safety requirements for platform lifts used by people with disabilities or limited mobility. These are low-speed lifts (no more than 0.15 m/s) that the earlier passenger-lift standards, EN 81-1 and EN 81-2, did not clearly cover.
At the time, Europe was placing growing emphasis on buildings designed to be accessible to everyone, so a single standard was needed for this entire category of lift under the EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC . That made it possible to apply the CE marking and use the same requirements across the European Union.
The standard has been revised several times since, most recently with a new edition approved in 2024, keeping pace with advances in lift technology and aligning it with the newer EN 81-20/50 framework.
Key Safety and Design Requirements of EN 81-41

As mentioned above, this standard sets the rules for lifts travelling at no more than 0.15 m/s. In detail, the safety controls covered by EN 81-41 include:
- Safety enclosure & door interlocks: fall protection and automatic door locking
- Overspeed / Overload protection: protection against excess speed or excess weight
- Emergency stop & emergency lowering: an emergency stop button and automatic lowering during a power failure
- Accessible controls: control buttons placed at a height suitable for wheelchair users
- Lighting & communication system: lighting and a communication system for emergencies
- Pit & headroom clearance: safe clearances above and below
Compliance and Application
- EN 81-41 works alongside EN 81-20 (Passenger and Goods Lifts) and EN 81-50 (Testing & Inspections)
to form a complete safety framework for every type of lift in Europe. - Manufacturers or installation partners that comply with this standard can issue a CE Marking confirming that the product is safe and meets European Union requirements.
- It applies to both private buildings and public buildings.
Why Anyone Installing a Home Lift Should Care About EN 81-41

Handing over a Cibes Lift to a homeowner who chose the V80
Anyone about to install a home lift — homeowners, architects, property developers, contractors, even condominium juristic persons and building managers — has to think about safety. But why should everyone care whether a lift holds EN 81-41, and what does it actually give you? Here is the short answer for each group involved.
- Homeowners: EN 81-41 assures you the lift is safe for everyone at home, whether that is older parents, children or the rest of the family. It is ideal if you are building a new house and want your parents to live upstairs, or renovating an older home so that seniors can get around on their own. The standard mandates a full set of safety systems, including emergency lowering, door interlocks and controls designed to universal design principles for the easiest, safest possible use.
- Architects / Interior Designers: EN 81-41 lets you design a lift that fits the space exactly, with no deep pit to dig and no bulky machine room. It suits any project, from luxury homes to renovations to tight sites that need a lift without tearing into the existing structure. EN 81-41 clearly specifies the minimum pit and headroom clearances for platform lifts running at up to 0.15 m/s.
- Property developers: EN 81-41 is a European standard that adds credibility to a project, lifts its image and builds long-term buyer confidence. It fits detached-house projects, premium villas or condominiums that want to sell on safety and European standards. It sits under the EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, supports CE Marking and helps building safety inspections go smoothly.
- Contractors / lift installation teams: Choose a lift certified to EN 81-41 and both installation and handover go faster and more smoothly, with simpler paperwork and fewer problems — whether you are installing for a new-build client or delivering to a developer who insists on European standards. EN 81-41 spells out the structural, electrical and safety-device requirements clearly, so installation teams and building inspectors can work easily and get approvals faster.
- Juristic persons / building managers: EN 81-41 helps you inspect, maintain and insure a lift correctly to international standards, whether that is the annual lift inspection in a condominium, an insurance renewal or a building inspection report for the authorities. It covers accessibility requirements, emergency communication and safety during a power failure, and works as real supporting evidence in a building inspection report.

Why Cibes Lift Comes Up So Often Alongside EN 81-41

The EN81-41 safety certificate issued by Liftinstituut
Cibes Lift has passed the EN81-41 safety standard, certified by Liftinstituut , an institute trusted by architects, developers and homeowners alike. It is a key benchmark for safety, installation, maintenance and emergency protection, and reflects the overall thinking of the European lift industry body known as EFESME ( European Federation for Elevator Small and Medium-sized Enterprises )
In short, if it is a platform lift meant to be “accessible to everyone” in a home or a building of up to 6 floors, it should hold the EN 81-41 lift safety standard as proof that it is safe for everyone.

Recessing the floor at home when the owner prefers not to add a ramp for installing a Cibes screw-driven lift
Take a look at the V80. It is an MRL model and needs no lift pit, because a ramp can be added to roll a wheelchair straight in. If you would rather not have a ramp, recessing the floor by 50-70 mm gives a neater installation just as well.
