A lift is a small compartment inside a building that carries people or goods up and down between floors, travelling vertically. It moves people and objects between levels efficiently. Modern lifts run on electric motors, which is why lifts play an ever greater role in everyday life. Passenger lift systems come in several types: traction lifts, hydraulic lifts, screw-driven lifts and vacuum lifts Here, though, we focus on the Cibes Lift screw-driven lift, a lift built around safety with a look made for residential homes.
Lift: A Transliteration from British English
In English the word comes in two forms, “Lift” and “Elevator”, depending on where you are: Europe says Lift, America says Elevator. Both mean the same thing yet are spelled completely differently. In Thai we use only one word, transliterated from the British English version.

The Thai word is a transliteration, set out officially under the transliteration system of the Royal Institute. English became the most widely used language for communication, adopted as an official language by many countries, and so grew into the world’s international language.
The correct Thai spelling must end with the letter tor tao, not tor thahan. A transliterated word is formed by pulling the sound a Thai ear hears as close to the original as possible.
Transliteration Rules from the Office of the Royal Society
- Transliteration means transcribing the letters of the source language into a form that is easy to read in Thai
- Separate transliteration rules are set for each source language
- Transliterated words used for so long that they count as Thai may keep their existing spelling — for example the two accepted Thai forms of chocolate, the Thai form of shirt, and the two accepted Thai forms of gas
- Proper nouns that have been in use for a long time may also keep their existing form
Now that the correct form is clear, the two spellings sound identical when read aloud, so in everyday use the difference matters little. In Thai, the words most often misspelled in this category are those with a silent final letter or a transliterated ending. For important documents, however, the correct Thai spelling should be used — booking a flight, taking out insurance, preparing official paperwork and the like should all follow proper Thai spelling.
Why Lifts Matter in Homes Today
Demand for residential lifts is growing by the day, and home lifts are more popular than ever. Whatever kind of house you have, a residential lift is always a strong choice. It suits older family members who find stairs difficult, making it far easier to move between floors. The market offers many types of residential lift, and you can pick whichever one fits your needs and preferences — a glass lift, a metal-cabin lift or any other type.
A home lift usually adds a sense of luxury and lifts the value of the property, so you can sell it on at a profit too. Different types of lift call for different shapes and footprints, so choosing a good lift also means being able to tailor the design to match the theme of your home!
